I spent a week volunteering in an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, just north of Chiang Mai. In the sanctuary are elephants rescued from the local tourism and logging industries. They're put through lots of abuse in order to submit to human orders, and when they come to the sanctuary we heal and rehabilitate them both physically and emotionally. Here are two elephants named Mae Boon Ma and Mae Bua Loy that I was privileged to wash, feed, and spend time with during my trip. These two are just a couple of old lady elephants who have gone through some dark times in their lives and have just come out stronger. They spend their days inseparable and truly are just a pair of best friends and Jungle Queens.
