Behind The Lens

Location

Most days, I will start practicing by taking photos at home to get a feel for settings for that day. I have several outdoor pets, so they are the best subjects to catch.

Time

I love cloudy days just as much as sunny ones, so I took the opportunity to shoot most of the morning/afternoon. I took this picture of Tai around 3 p.m. after several attempts to stop him from rubbing on my legs.

Lighting

During this, I was not really focusing on lighting as much as trying to get Tai to sit still. Since he was the main focus, I wanted a darker background that would allow his color to stand out but not to much since I like the "cloudy/gloomy" day look. It went well with his expression.

Equipment

I used my Canon EOS M2 with an Canon EF - EFM adapter to attach my Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8 EF lens. The lens are pretty sharp for the price and works great with the combination of the adapter and camera. I don't use tripods much since I am moving constantly to get shots of the pets and other animals.

Inspiration

I wanted to catch Tai showing his bored/tired expression before he got into play mode (since all of my pets have their own personalities). I love the challenge of capturing him and the others in different poses, which led me to his simple, yet signature look.

Editing

Post-processing was quick in Lightroom CC. I added a preset from freelightroompresets.co that is called "Montauk Bay" and after that, I just increased my temp just a little and played around with the blacks and shadows. I didn't do too much since this was a "portrait" of my cat.

In my camera bag

I like to keep my bag light, so I only carry my Canon EOS M2 attached with my Yongnuo 50mm lens and adapter or my EFM 18-55 mm kit lens.

Feedback

It takes a lot of patience to get these shots. I spend the majority of my time trying to stop them from rubbing or jumping on me and making them stay still. Timing is important, too. I will wait until they start playing or calm down before naps. It's weird how on schedule they are, even my dogs and other animals that visits our area have a schedule that they go by. The key is remembering.
