Behind The Lens
Location
I was visiting a village on the sea coast of Odisha, India to document people's adaptation to sea level rise on account of global warming. As I walked past a mud and thatch house, I noticed the pair of slippers just outside the entrance. I sensed a shot and I waited barely 30 ft away, on the path...Time
It was around noon, a time when we have been advised not to take photos under a harsh sun; but I went on waiting....Lighting
I sensed that the harsh light would accentuate any person or animal entering the darkness; and sure enough, this girl came in with a steel tumbler of cool water, searching for the guest who was somewhere around.. and I fired off a couple of shots, letting the camera decide on the exposure, with auto ISO... aperture was somewhere around f7, in order to get a degree of sharpness....Equipment
Shot on Canon 60D with a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 lens, unconsciously adjusted around 65 mm to get the best frame and appropriate exposure. No flash; indeed I do not use even the inbuilt one on my camera! Hand held.Inspiration
My sixth sense honed after nearly three decades of 'photography for pleasure'. I have travelled through years of photographying nature, patterns, and since the last fifteen years and more, I have settled down to a life looking for photos of people in rural settings and their expressions. Some six years ago, I decided to dedicate my hobby to 'photography for a cause'. I have produced a book on nomadic herders titlled "Fading Lifestyles, Shrinking Commons". I hope to bring about a State Policy support for the continuance of this practice. You can see this publication here: https://issuu.com/cymric/docs/herders_report_final_pdfEditing
Very simple processing in ACDSee, mainly some dodging and burning. I do not like to spend much time at my deskIn my camera bag
I love travelling light. So, if it is a wet season and the camera weight is not likely to strain my 67 year old limbs, then just a Canon 60D with the Tamron. If it is a dry season, and I need to lug along my bag for long hours, a Sony A6000 with a 24-105 F4 G series lens. Some cleaning material and lots of 64 or 32 GB SD cards...that is it.Feedback
Wonderful photographs are now millions to a dozen. So, strive for being of service, documenting life in order to give back. Photography is as much for your pleasure as for someone else's benefit. Train your eyes to see and anticipate. Sometimes, you see more of a shot when back at the desk; so take plenty. Bless you.
