Location
This photo was taken inside Notre-Dame basilica in old Montréal. A great example of Gothic revival architecture. The interior colours of this church are mind blowing and make a great low light photography opportunity.Time
This was shot sometime around noon on a sunny and partly cloudy day.Lighting
The lighting is very well controlled, as clouds passed in front of the glaring sun the light inside the church changed very little. The stained glass would sometimes cast different colours but it was very hard to notice. This allowed me to shoot for hours trying different techniques and camera settings.Equipment
I shot this with my Nikon D7100, 17-55 F2.8 and no flash. This was hand held so I had to increase my ISO and open up the lens to achieve a shutter speed suitable.Inspiration
I am a big fan of old architecture. As I walked into this church and looked around it screamed "take my picture" I was very happy to hear that you are allowed to shoot pictures in this church, even with a flash! I opted not to use a flash in any of the indoor pictures of this church as I wanted to capture all the natural light as my eyes saw it.Editing
There is very little post processing in all the church photos in my gallery. I made minor adjustments to the contrast and cropped in Light room.In my camera bag
I always travel with my D7100, 50mm f1.8, 17-55 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, 8mm fisheye and sb-800. All Nikon gear except for the excellent Samyang fisheye.Feedback
If trying this type of photography or any photography for that matter, my best advice is to try a lot of different things. Take the time, look at how people are viewing your subject and shoot from a different angle. We see the world from the level of our eyes, so get low or get high and shoot from a different perspective than we see the world normally. I find it adds a flare to the final image. The great thing about digital is it doesn't cost you anything but time to shoot more. After all, I learn most from my mistakes.
