Normanton Church – originally St. Matthews Church – served as a parish church until the early 1700s when a large part of the village was demolished to create an estate for the Heathcote Baronets. These wealthy aristocrats used the church as their private chapel and mausoleum.
The church was deconsecrated in the 1970's and was due for demolition but a public outcry saved it .
The lower level was filled with rubble and a new concrete floor was laid 60cm above water level.
The church is now used for civil weddings and serves as a museum devoted to the history of Rutland water and the surrounding area
