Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot on Dawlish Warren's path to the beach. It is part of "National Nature Reserve" and located in South Devon, UK.

Time

It was about 30 mins before the golden hour.

Lighting

The clouds acted like a softbox, so no hard lights and shadows in the photo. Though this isn't necessary a good thing for a b&w image because of the lack of contrast, this one still has a lot of it.

Equipment

I shot this image with a Nikon D750 using a 16-35, f4 lens. This image was shot using a ND1000 Hoya filter on a Vanguard tripod.

Inspiration

When I shot this image I got that feeling you have when the weather is hot, you traveled some miles to the beach and then you're anxious the see the ocean and feel the sand with your feet. When you finally see it, it's like the way to your freedom.

Editing

Though landascape photography usually involves a lot of processing, this photo wasn't so processed. I did some Lightroom adjustments playing with the highlights, shadows, contrast, etc. but nothing major. I also used the stamp tool in Photoshop to remove a small banner from one of the poles.

In my camera bag

Everything starts with the camera and the lens I use most, which is my Nikon 16-35 f4. I'm using a Samsonite dslr backpack that carries everything I need. I also have in my bag a 50 mm f1.8 lens. I don't go anywhere without my nd filters, my shutter cable release, spare battery and spare memory card. I also have a headlamp and a flashlight.

Feedback

The weather conditions are crucial. You need a cloudy-windy day to get that stretched clouds. You must have at least a 10 stop nd filter and a steady tripod ( don't forgot it's windy outside:) ). If you find a path like this one, try different frames. I did so but the only frame I liked was this one with the path in the middle. Don't forget to level your composition you don't want a dodgy horizon:).
