Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Maryland Zoo. As an amateur photographer, I'm a big fan of the zoo where wonderful surprises await around every corner.

Time

This photo was taken on March 26, 2016 at 2:16 p.m. during the Bunny Bonanzoo celebration at the zoo. We, the family, had been walking around the zoo for hours viewing all the lovely creatures and taking part in all the festivities for that day. As we were heading toward the petting zoo, I spotted this beautiful creature in the barnyard area. The wingspan on this peacock was magnificent.

Lighting

While the day was hot and the sun was high, I got lucky with this little guy. His location was perfectly set in an area with plenty of shade and natural light. I knew with these lighting conditions I would be able to capture his beautiful luminescent colors. All I had to do was wait.

Equipment

This image was shot with a Nikon D5000 with a Tamron lens. Settings f/6.3, 1/125 sec., 300m. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I'm always on the lookout for something new, different and interesting at the zoo. A interesting creatures, attractive views, colorful creatures, beautiful eyes, etc. The luminescent shimmer from this peacock's full wingspan caught my attention as we headed to the petting zoo. I couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Editing

Yes, I always shoot in raw format. For this image I adjusted the exposure and sharpened slightly. I also boosted the saturation to draw out the deep blue color in the body and the beautiful greens, blues, and orange in the wingspan.

In my camera bag

I don't have much in the way of equipment. I usually travel light with my Nikon D5000 and two lenses. The first lens is my Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens which is my favorite lens. My second would be my prime lens, the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Zoom Nikkor.

Feedback

Start at your local zoo. There are so many different animals with such different characteristics and personalities. It's a great place to practice and learn. For me, my beginnings started at my local library with a few good books and the zoo where subject matter is never-ending.
