Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the nursery farm where I work in Beamsville, Ontario, Canada, just North of Niagara Falls.

Time

It was mid-morning, about 10:30am.

Lighting

Cloudy days are my friend! I always get the best images when I have the sun behind me and lots of good cloud cover. I love taking photos outdoors.

Equipment

I have recently gotten a Nikon D5100! My first DSLR! So far I only have the 18-55mm kit lens (with a UV filter). This photo was one of the very first ones I took with it! I am looking forward to purchasing a flash and a tripod soon.... and to winning some great stuff on ViewBug!!!

Inspiration

I am designing the cover for the nursery's 2017 Catalogue! I wanted to capture the beauty of the trees on the escarpment surrounding the farm and the expanse of sky, while emphasizing one of the beautiful flowers that we grow there. This one is Allium. I love the purple/pink colour.

Editing

For this particular shot I used Photoshop CC to add an artistic flair with the Oil Paint filter. I chose a large brush stroke and higher percentage to give the photo an impressionist feel.

In my camera bag

I am just getting started as a photographer (prior to this photo, I took all my other pictures with a phone camera!) I have a UV filter for my lens, a cleaning kit, a battery charger and an extra SD card. I am looking forward to purchasing a flash and trying out some different accessories and lenses as I develop my skills and vision.

Feedback

I was lucky enough to have these flowers in 1 gallon pots (we grow them on the nursery farm) so I was able to maneuver them around and group them together to get just the shot I wanted. I placed them in a tiered fashion on wooden skids under tall trees to induce further shade and I took a lot of shots from different angles and heights. Flowers open their blooms at different times during the day and react to external changes, so it's always a good idea with plant photos to spend some time getting to know your subject... bloom time, zone, etc... flowers have unique 'personalities'!
