Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Rattlesnake Lake near North Bend Washington. It's close enough to Seattle to make sunset after having dinner with your family.

Time

This photo was taken just after sunset when the sun was down behind the mountain in the left of the image which created the nice soft light.

Lighting

Sunset is nice, but last light is even better, but be quick because it doesn't last long!!

Equipment

I used a Canon 6D with the Canon 17-44mm f4.8 lens, a MeFoto Roadtrip Tripod, no external light source and a 2 stop graduated neuteral density filter. It was photographed using a remote.

Inspiration

The beautiful and calm sky that mimicked the still water was so serene while te tree stump in the foreground was ragged and dead. It stood in stark contrast with the rest of its surroundings which flourished with life.

Editing

Only minor post processing was done. A little bit of straightening and some color adjustments. Everything else was done in camera and by using my neuteral density filters.

In my camera bag

Canon 6d, 17-44mm f4.8 lens, 70-300mm f4.8 lens, 2x converter circular polarizer and ND filters, remote cord with extension, MeFoto Roadtrip Tripod, Black Diamond headlamp, Sealife camera system for fun and underwater shooting, a light meter and my phone with the Slower Shutter app.

Feedback

My best advice is to get to your destination early and scout it beforehand to find the perfect shot, that way when night comes around you aren't fumbling around in low light trying to set everything up. Also do your research beforehand. Know where the sun will be and what time it will disappear. Lastly, don't get stuck in one place. Keep moving around and find better angles.
