Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of a vintage 1912 steam locomotive was taken on its approach to the Kettle Valley Steam Railway station in Summerland, BC. Had to act fast as the locomotive only releases steam from its smokestack on approach. Luckily, there was only a gentle breeze that time and the released steam remained suspended for an extended period of time.

Time

I remember this photo was taken at noon on a very bright sunny day. I was awestruck with the immense structure of the locomotive and the glorious column of smoke it produces. Had to stand on a picnic table to get above the people lined up to take their own pictures. Would love to see this beast again.

Lighting

It was a very bright day with the sun overhead. I had to make do with the lighting due to the time of day. On post processing, I decided to make the picture in black and white to create a vintage feel that to me was appropriate for the subject.

Equipment

I used my trusty Canon EOS Rebel T5 with an EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 telephoto lens. Photo taken balancing on top of a picnic table!

Inspiration

The raw power of the steam locomotive was mesmerizing. And the iconic sound of the whistle as it released steam was something I wanted to hear first hand. The picture I took would keep that memory alive.

Editing

I edited the photo and made it black and white. I adjusted the shadows a bit to emphasize the column of smoke and to create a vintage feel.

In my camera bag

My lens of choice is a 50mm f1.8. It's great for everyday use. And for landscapes, I use a 10-18mm ultrawide angle lens. And for the voyeur in me, I have a 75-300mm f4-5.6 lens to capture objects like this locomotive from afar.

Feedback

When taking pictures of fast moving objects, you have to seek a good spot without anything or anyone crowding you. In this case, I chose a picnic table to rise above the people. Since I am still a newbie in photography, I took a lot of pictures of this locomotive as it approached the station. I had a lot of ify photos but that's what has to be done to shoot fast moving objects. When in doubt, take another photo! And another! And another!
