Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my studio at home. Since I'm still a student, living with my parents, it's not the kickass studio as I would like it to be, but it's ok for now ;)

Time

I think it was somewhere around noon that I felt the urge to create. I often get that feeling when I'm busy studying. At first I tried to ignore this feeling and tried to concentrate on my books... Guess what... The urge to create was way stronger than the urge to study, I still had 4 days till my next exam, enough time to get in the studio. I loved making this photograph, it was such a fun thing to do!

Lighting

I shot this picture in the studio using my Falcon Eyes studio set. I used 2 lights, one to light up the background and one for the model (myself).

Equipment

For this photo I used my Canon 70D. Because it's a self-portrait I had to use my tripod. I used the Manfrotto MK055XPRO3-3W which I got from my parents for christmas, thanks mom and dad for the perfect gift, I really love it. When I first started making self-portraits, I didn't had a remote control which means that I only had 9 seconds between pushing the button en getting in position for the camera. It's not always that convenient so I bought a remote control, which I also used for this picture. Because of the remote control, I was able to sit still the entire time and just move my hand, this made the post processing easier.

Inspiration

For this picture I got inspired by an old painting. I loved the position of the model and the look in her eyes. I wanted to recreate this in my picture. The hands I used are something that I have used in several other photographs.

Editing

Yes, I used a little post-processing for this one ;) It's a self-portrait and all hands are my own so unless I'm an eight-handed monster, I had some photoshop work to do. For this picture I made a composite of 8 different pictures. They were all basically the same, only my hand was on a different position.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Canon 70D with me with 2 lenses. The first lens is my Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, I like this lens because it's a good allround lens for everything I need. My second lens is the famous 'plastic fantastic', the 50mm f/1.8 from Canon. The name gives it away, it's from plastic but it's fantastic.I still have another lens, my 55-250mm from Canon but I usually don't bring it with me unless I know I will use it, which is not that often... Besides my camera and lenses I always bring my reflector if I have a photoshoot. I really love my reflector, it's so handy because I love to work with natural light! I wouldn't like to do a photoshoot without using one, it's such a difference! If you have never used one before, I suggest you just try one and discover the advantages yourself. Or just google it, that's fine too..

Feedback

Be creative, dare to be different and most important, love what you do! If you have an idea, but you don't know if it's gonna work, don't think, just do it! If this means you'll have to rebuilt a whole city out of paper as a decor for your picture, just do it, have fun doing it and yes, sometimes things don't turn out the way you liked it, but at least you had some fun? If it's turning out exactly as you wanted, you'll be thrilled, it's the best feeling in the world but you can only accomplish this by trying. Here are some things I think will make things a little bit easier for you - write down your idea - make some sketches (even if you can't draw) - list the items you will need - make some preparations - make sure if you're working with a model that you guys are on the same wavelength because conceptual shoots can ask more effort from the model (and photographer) - take your laptop with you, it will come in handy! - enjoy the shoot!
