Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was take at the pier in San Clemente, California facing towards the Dana Point Headlands.

Time

This was late afternoon in the fall.

Lighting

God was in charge of lighting that day.

Equipment

This was my Canon 70D with a 28-205mm EF lens. Due to the crop sensor it was shot at about 140mm (88mm on the lens). Shutter speed was 160th so I hand held this, I didn't want any soothing of the waves but as it was getting darker I didnt want to close it down too much. Other than a polarizer and a UV filter, It was pretty natural.

Inspiration

Living close to the coast in Southern California I have a lot chances to get some pretty incredible sunsets. I was out to dinner one night and saw a great opportunity. The double sun spots were just luck. In So Cal we are coming up on the time of year (summer) where it is bright, sunny and no clouds, and afternoons are full of low fog and high clear for the most part. I miss texture in the skies.

Editing

Basic LightRoom editing. I like to use as much as caught in camera as I can. I like natural light, color, etc. So minimal processing ie. dehazing, a color boost here and there but its pretty much what I captured. I have a

In my camera bag

I carry a pretty full bag. I have my 28-105mm EF lens, a 75-300mm EF, 50mm 1.8 EF-S, 24mm EF-S, 10-22mm EF-S, a Neewer NW680 flash, polarizer and UV (lens protection) filters for each of my lenses. All of my lenses at this point are Canon. I have a medium sized K&F concept bag and tripod/monopod that is great and a Peak industries sling strap that I love.

Feedback

Just shoot, find the angle you like and take 30 pictures changing settings incrementally as you go. I throw away a lot more pictures than I take, thats part of the fun. Trial and error, if you find something really great then go back, change your lens, time of day, weather conditions, etc.
