Behind The Lens

Location

I was asked by a friend if i would like to come along and takes some photographs of a regular model he uses in an abandoned mill in Dunfermline,Fife,Scotland. As you can see from the background, the interior of the mill still has it's original fine wooden frames and doors, and some magnificent stained glass,it made for an interesting environment to work in.

Time

This was taken on a Saturday afternoon around 2:00pm, the Summer had just arrived and the Sun was shining brightly outside, although indoors it was rather dark but with plenty of opportunities to use the available light coming in from the broken and delapidated windows,it made for some interesting shots to say the least.

Lighting

This shot was achieved using the available light coming in from another room adjacent to the model, but more light was needed to balance the other side of her face, also i wanted to get a catch light hitting her striking eyes, one of her main features, the bone structure of the face was wonderful and also wanted to highlight her magnificent cheekbones. To achieve this i decided to use a single speedlight with a diffuser so as not to make the light too harsh.

Equipment

Camera- Canon 70d (handheld) Lens- Yongnuo 50mm prime lens Speedlight- Yongnuo (1)

Inspiration

I've always loved abandoned buildings for a photo-shoot,and jumped at the opportunity to try this one out,i've always loved portraiture as well and thought the model was perfect for this, i was looking to try and get that old style movie still look with this shoot, and although it wasn't perfect, i reckon i pretty much achieved what i was looking for.

Editing

Yes.... I edited the Camera raw file in Adobe Lightroom to correct minor details then opened it up in Adobe Photoshop to apply filters with a plug-in called Nik Software, i altered the colour from a pinkish hue to one that matched the colour of the surroundings.I also used the spot healing brush to remove some minor blemishes from the face.

In my camera bag

Canon 70d 18-135 mm lens (favourite) 50 mm prime lens 200 mm lens Several filters Tripod

Feedback

I wouldn't give advice per say,the most important thing for me is to have an idea before hand of what you want,if it doesn't quite work then don't despair, photography is all about enjoying it, even if it doesn't always work out. :-D Colin
