Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at Kill Devil Hills beach in the Outer Banks, NC. I am an amateur self-taught photographer and was actually pretty surprised when I saw how this photo turned out. It made me pretty excited!

Time

I took this at around 11pm on our condo rental's back deck. I remember trying so hard to get a good picture of the lightning and then this huge bolt struck the ocean right as my open shutter was about to end.

Lighting

The lighting is 100% lightning. It was pitch black dark outside so when this bolt struck it pretty much lit up most of the sky around me.

Equipment

This photo was shot on a Canon EOS Rebel t6s. The lens I used is the Canon EFS 18-135mm lens. I used a Manfrotto compact travel tripod and did not use any flash.

Inspiration

There was a huge thunderstorm approaching over the ocean and there was tons of lightning action from left to right. I kept snapping pictures until I got this one and was pleasantly surprised!

Editing

I did not do any post-processing to this photo.

In my camera bag

I usually have my tripod, zoom lens, camera, SD cards, portrait lens, charger, extra battery, and 18-135mm lens.

Feedback

Don't give up! Capturing this photo took lots of patience. I was standing outside for about two hours until I was satisfied with a good picture. Lightning can be pretty difficult to capture, so I recommend using a 30 second shutter speed. It gives just the right amount of lighting and also captures the web effect of the lightning.
