Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in Poulsbo on a family trip. Every year on the 3rd of July we head into Poulsbo to watch the fireworks on the water. The fireworks are so large and spectacular that it almost looks like the fireworks are right above you. It is an amazing experience.

Time

The show generally starts at around 9 or 10 in the evening. We always get bundled up on the fly-bridge. The year I took this photo I made a friend with a girl who was on the boat tied off of ours. We sat together and took pictures together that whole weekend. Photography is always opening doors to new friendships and experiences.

Lighting

I wanted to create a light painting effect with this. The goal was to only see the light of the fireworks streaking through the dark.

Equipment

My only tool was my Nikon Coolpix 520. I had it set on the firework setting (go figure right?).

Inspiration

Once I started trying light painting photos, I wondered what pictures of fireworks could create. So for a month I practiced with glow sticks to see what these could possibly turn out to be. Only when it comes to fireworks, you need to be quick!

Editing

The firework setting was mostly adequate enough. The only real editing I did was upping the contrast to make the colors and streaks stick out more.

In my camera bag

Depends on the bag. I have a smaller bag that I normally take with me and it always contains my camera, my camcorder, an extra battery, and a mini tripod. My large bag has all of this and extra cards, lens cleaning supplies, and usually a small bag of trail mix.

Feedback

My advice for fireworks would be to wait until you can watch a show since a show will have one after the other. So there's no waiting game and you will definitely capture something. Also just have fun with it and be picture happy with it. Take one after the other and look at what you get later. Most of what you get will be keepers and will need hardly any editing. Just have fun!
