Location
This photo was taken on a trip to Santa Monica Pier with some family and friends. Santa Monica is a great place to take nice photos as you can capture the beach environment, as well as the pier and city.Time
This photo was taken on July 21, 2016, a few minutes after sunset.Lighting
My main goal when taking this picture was to attempt to have the Ferris Wheel lights contrast well with the gradient night sky. I did not need to make any major lighting adjustments in the process of taking this photo.Equipment
I took this image using a Nikon D7100 with an 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. I did not use any other equipment.Inspiration
I am in a worldwide photography group and was inspired by the other amazing photographers to take a photo with a dark background and bright object. I was not planning on taking this photo prior to arriving at the pier but was lucky to reach in time to take the shot.Editing
I did not need to do much post-processing, as the colors were and overall image quality was already sufficient. The only post-processing I did was slightly increase the image contrast to make the Ferris Wheel lights a little brighter. In my camera bag
Compared to most photographers, I normally do not carry a lot of equipment in my bag. At most, I have my trusty Nikon D7100, my 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G lens, a tripod, and my 4k action camera.Feedback
When trying to capture an object that contrasts well with the background, you should take multiple shots adjusting the iso and aperture to achieve the most appealing image. Also, you should aim to capture objects which are higher up as you only want to have the object and a background in the shot.
