Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Grand Teton National Park

Time

This was right after sunrise in the summer. I met up with a few photographers that i followed on Instagram for sunrise in a favorite spot.

Lighting

Sunrise is my favorite time of day to take photos here. The sun is behind you, and as it rises, it casts the most beautiful warm color on the mountains!

Equipment

This was taken with my Nikon D810 and 24-700mm lens on a tripod with a neutral density filter to do a longer exposure and soften the clouds and water.

Inspiration

This is a favorite spot of mine... I photograph here as often as possible. I love the unobstructed view of the Tetons, and how they reflect in the water.

Editing

I always have to straighten my horizon and remove dust spots from the sky! Since it was shot in raw, I always check the white balance, set my white and black points, and then add a little contrast and sharpening.

In my camera bag

A lot of what I carry in my bag depends on what I'm photographing that day and where I am. When I travel, I always take 2 camera bodies - my D810 and my D5, and in addition to my 24-70mm lens, I always carry my 70-200. In the Tetons, there's always the possibility of seeing wildlife, so I also carry my 80-400. I also always bring my tripod and a circular polarizing filter and a neutral density filter.

Feedback

The weather always plays a big part in images. If there's a location I want to photograph, I figure out if the light will be better in the morning or evening, and then hope for clear enough skies to see the mountains and hopefully a few clouds. =) Patience and luck are a huge part of most images... if you get to a location and don't like the sky or lighting, there's a good chance if you wait around for 30-60 minutes that will change.
