Behind The Lens

Location

Idaho Falls, Idaho. This is the dam on the Snake River.

Time

We arrived at our hotel which is just to the left of this photograph right on the Snake River in Idaho Falls, Idaho. It was late in the afternoon, and I went out to investigate the Snake River. I took several pictures of different aspects of the River including this one which included the dam and the distant Mormon temple.

Lighting

This was natural sunlight heading toward dusk.

Equipment

At the time I had an iPhone 4s. I have since upgraded to an iPhone SE. These have been the only cameras I have used in my photography.

Inspiration

I was on my first, what I call, "Photo Safari." We were traveling 17 days from Los Angeles to Yellowstone National Park, and I was taking photographs all the way. This location was our center of operations going back and forth to Yellowstone.

Editing

I heightened the green of the shrubbery and the over-all blue of the water and falls. I cloned out some unnecessary traffic in the background so that the focus would remain on the dam and waterfall.

In my camera bag

I just carry my iPhone and depend on uploading my photographs to my laptop and doing post-processing there.

Feedback

Look for the primary focus of any photograph you take. Concentrate on the composition (and crop if you have to) to highlight the dramatic aspects of whatever you are shooting. There can be drama everywhere you look.
