I love the composition of this image! The flat, grey-green colour of the water sets off the croc and the nyala perfectly. Great capture!

The beauty of this image is not the death of the Gazell but the life giving circle of life giving survival. Basic powerful image dramatic stark reality.

It was a hard thing to watch. Dry waterhole, small croc. He fastened onto her hock when she came down to drink. A massive tug of war took place over about 5 hours. the water was too shallow and the croc too small to drown her. Every time the croc came up to breathe, the nyala made headway, and at times seemed as if she would make the bank. But every time the croc submerged, he would anchor on the bottom and she couldn't budge him. The end was inevitable. I kind of felt I owed it the respect of staying till it was all over.Editing
