Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in southern Indiana in my front yard.

Time

I don't recall the exact time, but the sun was high in the sky. So late morning to early afternoon is about right.

Lighting

It was a sunny day with a very light overcast. That is the light I used.

Equipment

I used a Canon 80D with the 18-135mm lens that came with camera and that is all.

Inspiration

I had went out to the front yard to look at how our cherries were coming along. As I got back and close to the front door I noticed this garter snake on some straw from landscape work we were doing. Luckily I keep the camera by the front door. I got on my belly and took many shots to get that tongue. He got use to me and wasn't sticking it out that much any more for what I wanted, so I called my wife over to give him something fresh to sniff. That is why he isn't looking at me in this shot! Bless her heart!

Editing

This is one of my very few photos that I left as is with the exception of cropping it.

In my camera bag

I have been taking pictures all my life and only a year ago decided to take it all the way. I have a huge wish list still. So what you will find is a Canon 600 speed light with the GaryFong diffuser. Memory cards, lens cloth, extra batteries for flash and camera. My bag is to small to carry my camera so depending what is on my camera determines which of these lenses will be in my bag. Canon 55 to 250mm Lens or the 18 to 135mm lens

Feedback

This is one of my sharpest images without using a tripod. By laying on my belly I was able to use my elbows to really brace myself. I did try to watch how I breathed or didn't breath when pressing the shutter. I had the camera set to high speed continuous. I shot it at 135mm / f5.6 / 1/1600 of a second. I did a lot of guessing when the tongue would come out so you may need to have some patience for this shot. I got on my belly about 10 or more feet and slowly worked my way to about 3 feet or so before I started shooting. Have a lot of memory left. I deleted a lot of images when I was done. Last, but not least, have your wife nearby to get that tongue moving again!
