Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Nickerson Beach in Quincy, MA. It's a dope little hidden spot tucked away out of plain sight behind this V.F.W. post You take this narrow dirt path, don't fall.. keep walking.. is there really a beach or this a 'Hostel' remake is what you're thinking, then... it's a gem to see.

Time

I love this image because it really capped off an amazing day. I was fortunate enough to be asked to participate in a music video/photo shoot for an extremely talented Boston area DJ and rapper, Money Mav aka Maverik. The energy of the shoot was amazing. I got to take photos of beautiful scenery that was so close and I never knew it existed. The day started around 5 for the summer time vibe and i got to hang around wonderfully talented and amazing people and I was blessed enough to be around some truly dope models who made the shoot so fun and professional. It was a great day of shooting and I had just finished holding a reflector shield to help gather some light for a portion of the video shoot. It was approaching sunset and the colors were just beautiful and I just felt there could be a great shot possibility. The silhouette idea just flashed in my mind; simultaneously the director yelled it was time to shoot again so I had to act quickly.

Lighting

The colors of a sunset are just amazing. The mid orange calm, the warmth, the heat across the skyline... Put a goddess type pageant queen with a dope pose in there and the mysterious, Sexy silhouette sunset is right on time..

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Sony a6000 and no other special equipment. I believe the lens was the 55/210 mm.

Inspiration

I was surrounded by beautiful wonderful vibes all day. Nature was at its best; I had seen the tide go from high to low, and this beautiful model, named Franchesca was just glowing. She's gorgeous for sure but her energy was just crazy I was wondering, what would happen if I could try and capture her aura and appeal against the wonderful backdrop unfolding before me. I asked her real quick what she thought about the idea and the director yelled it was time for another video shot. She ran to the shore line and we got some pure magic. So yeah, thanks for the inspiration Franchesca. You made it Dope!

Editing

I did no post processing.

In my camera bag

Well, the lens I'm really digging right now is my SMC Pentax-M 1:1.4 50mm. This lens is just amazing. Yes, it is manual focus and it requires an adapter for the Sony E-mount, as is my Sony a6000, but if you can swing manual focus, the images are superb. The 1.4 aperture allows for beautiful bokeh and achieves wonderful sharpness, especially with the soft/unfocused background effect. My second favorite lens would have to be the E 55-210 mm F4.5-6.3 OSS. I love the fact that I can zoom with this lens honestly and that it has the optical image stabilization. After shooting with the Pentax, it's nice to have varying lengths and have a little tech help with the OSS. It's important to switch things up and get different vantage points, angles and proximity especially on all your subjects. And lastly to that point, I came across a wonderful little lens in form and price. The Fotasy N35 35MM F1.7 CCTV lens is a blast to shoot with and a bargain to boot. I believe I paid around 35 for this lens and it's ridiculous. There is no need for an adapter and the images are spot on and clear as long as your manual focusing is too! No clicks, pretty smooth on the focus ring, just watch out for not screwing too far as you may take it off. Keep that in mind and you'll be good to go. Nice and durable, notherwise big at all. Tremendous photos. I do also have the 16-35MM kit lens that comes with Sony a6000 when purchased in that bundle arrangement. This lens is cool too, just wanted to try some others and probably many more. One day.

Feedback

Look for that feeling and when you feel it shoot it. There will be a whole lot of things going on or maybe nothing at all, but there is a moment that says something is coming and you can feel it. When you get that feeling, you just have to wait. Have fun, stay alert and be in the moment. If all goes well, and you're lucky... you might have a good picture.
