This photo was taken at my home this summer in St Anthony, ID. She was outside on our deck playing.Time
It was a beautiful day, July 10th 2016 to be precise. I was hiding underneath our porch trying to get a very natural picture of our somewhat ferile cat. I looked over and I saw our new pet schnauzer watching me with this amazing expression on her face.Lighting
I was deliberately outside in the evening because of the position of our deck. The sun couldn't hit us directly so I didn't have to worry about flares or washing out the image.Equipment
I used an all digital sony alpha camera I had only recently purchased. I had it propped on my backpack so I could stay hidden while I watched our pets interact.Inspiration
Our pets are so an animated. They each have wonderful and unique expressions. I was actually stalking our wild pet cat while she stalked the dogs. On a whim I decided to redirect my attention towards the dogs. Maddie must have seen me hiding under the deck because she turned and looked dead center at my camera. Normally I cant take her picture because she's always running. This time she was startled enough to stay still.Editing
I did not need to do any post-processing.In my camera bag
Currently I am using only my sony alpha as as it is my favorite camera. I have several others but they are of lower quality. I am still learning photography but I hope to add to my available equipment.Feedback
I love taking pictures. But most of all I love taking pictures that make the viewer gasp or go completely quite in awe. Photography allows us to capture someones happiest memory or perhaps their saddest. If you really want to capture special and unscripted moments you need to always be watching the world for opportunities. I sat in a horse field until sunset watching the animals quietly. And eventually a shot presented itself that makes me smile to this day. This is especially true for people and animals. When we see a picture of our pet we want it to be a moment that captured who they were to us and why we love them. Take your camera driving around your neighborhood. Take it everywhere. And wherever you go think about what you want to capture. Not surprisingly I have gone places to photograph one thing and ended up finding a more engaging subject.
