Location
This photo was taken at Munra Point in Oregon. An fun, steep hike that gives you one of the best views in the Columbia River Gorge.Time
This photo was taken in the late morning. I remember waking up early to make the drive out to the Gorge, probably around 5AM. The hike to the summit was short, but extremely steep and took about 2 hours. I arrived to catch the last bit of fog lifting out of the Gorge.Lighting
The lighting was poor all day while hiking. I figured I wasn't going to get much, but when I reached the top the grey setup a nice, eerie mood with the fog and the green hillsideEquipment
I used a Nikon D3300 and a 35mm lens with a polarized filter.Inspiration
I had read up on the location quite a bit and new it had potential to make an amazing photo. But, when I went visibility was poor and the river could barely be seen. But, when I looked around my eyes followed the trail on the spin of the hill that lead into the forest. The combination of fog and overcast created wonderfully ominous feeling that I just had to capture.Editing
I just did a few color corrections in Lightroom. I try to keep it as natural as possible. In my camera bag
I try to keep it minimal. I will usually carry a couple lenses and a tripod. I find that the best shots come from getting creative and working with less, rather than relying on a bunch of gear. For this photo all I had was my camera with a 35mm lens and a couple filters.Feedback
Get outside and take photos. Landscapes are everywhere. You don't have to live in Iceland or New Zealand or even the Pacific Northwest to find beautiful landscapes. Play with angles, time of day, lenses, and everything else. Or, test yourself. One of my favorite things to do is to bring one lens on a trip. I prefer to bring a prime lens, so you have to really get creative to find the perfect shot.
