This sunset photo was taken on the bay side of the Outer Banks in North Carolina.Time
Obviously, the photo was taken at sunset on Thanksgiving Day after returning from a delicious meal at a local restaurant.Lighting
The sunset provided all the lighting the photo needed. The camera's exposure rendered the building completely black adding to the deep colors of the image.Equipment
The camera was a Nikon F5 loaded with Velvia Color Slide Film rated at 50 ISO with a 70-200 mm Nikkor lens. My Gitzo tripod was still in the car and not wanting to waste any time capturing this once-in-a lifetime-moment, I rested the camera on the deck railing of the house I was renting. providing all the stability I needed to get the shot.Inspiration
I'd never seen a sunset this vibrant with patches of blue sky providing an interesting contrast to the fiery red. Making the image truly outstanding was the added bonus of the brilliant red reflected in the water of the bay.Editing
No post-processing was needed as the Nikon F5 has the distinct feature of being able to capture color.In my camera bag
When traveling, my Nikon 55 is my go-to camera with the 70-200 mm Nikkor lens. I also keep an 18-70 mm Nikkor lens for wide angle work. A cable release, Zeiss lens wipes and the charging gear for the camera's battery completes the picture. Outside my camera bag is a sturdy Gitzo Tripod.Feedback
Capturing an image like this requires you to carry your camera with you wherever you go so it's at the ready for whenever an exciting image presents itself. As a photographer, you don't want to have special moments become the one that got away.
