Location
This shot was taken from an underground hide at Zimanga Private Game Reserve, Pongola. South Africa. The hide is highly sophisticated, allowing for overnight stays. I was just doing a short recce, and spent about a half day there.Time
Mid-morning. Later than would usually be ideal. There was lots of cloud cover and that softened the harsh African sun just enough.Lighting
Mid-morning, lots of high cloud, sun peeping in and out. You had to pick your momentEquipment
nikon d3, Nikkor 80~200mm f2,8 ED , Wimberly gimbal.Inspiration
things were quiet by Zimanga standards; no big five, no major safari icons. But that's the great thing about a good hide. even the mundane produces unique opportunities Mid-morning a small herd of impala (melampus) approached the water cautiously, drinking and starting back, as is their way. I noticed the symmetry of their drinking in groups and framed for it.Editing
Capture NX. Just tweaked chroma a fraction. 1x pixel width unsharp mask on 72dpi resized. In my camera bag
pair of d3's. 14-~24mm, 24mm analog & 55 mm analog for macro (with tubes & reversal ring.) , 80~200mm f2.8, 200~400mm f4, 500mm f5.6 mirror. (Lots of old glass, but good, solid Nikon stuff)Feedback
Great wildlife shots are mostly just being there, oh yes, and anticipation. Anticipation is helpful. IF you have a sense of how and when the animals will move you can put yourself in place to have a chance at it.
