Being my god daughters 1st birthday we wanted to get her a cake, very sweet watching her blow out the candle but the look on her face when we moved the cake was so sad so we let her have the first bite or two to herself.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the home of the client, simple set up and ready for chocolate to start flying. I am able to travel with studio lighting and have 7 years of experience behind me, learning from an International Award Winning Photographer.

Time

This was in the afternoon inside after her nap, this meant we had a baby with plenty of energy and happiness.

Lighting

I wanted the key focus to be on her, with my lighting set up either side and behind, this created a soft balance between the background and foreground with a soft pink glow. This gave the image more of loving feel and with all the lights, picking up the detail of the happiness of Amelie.

Equipment

I was using a Nikon d300s, a set of elinchrom lighting with external wireless flash, tripod, backdrop and reflector.

Inspiration

This is one of my favourite images. My clients wanted some images, something fun and creative with their new baby daughter. Once i had set up all my kit, we sat Amelie in her highchair, lights and camera ready. Expecting the chocolate to go flying everywhere, she carefully picked up individual decorations off the cake and ate them slowly. After 5 odd minutes, she quickly came to realise she had us all wrapped around her little finger and then cake started to fly.

Editing

I used Aperture to edit the basic image although i prefer to get the image as close to perfect on the shoot to reduce the post processing. Made the final adjustments in Photoshoot, adding the pink background glow and removing chocolate stains.

In my camera bag

I tend to try carry as much with me all the time, you know what situation you may find yourself in and need a different lens. I carry two camera bodies, 4 batteries, 3 lenses (super wide, standard wide - zoom, telephoto, prime), flash (with spare batteries), filters, cleaning kit and usually my tripod or at least monopod. Plus i carry a medical kit, you never know, and a waterproof bag for my phone, keys etc.

Feedback

Plan your shoot, do some test shots before, specially with children to get the lighting right. If your not sure, do some practise shots at home. The internet is full so fantastic tutorials and help so don't be afraid to use it. Youtube is great for videos for reference.
