Behind The Lens

Location

Corning, NY

Time

Old 765 Arrived approx. 12pm and stayed in town for 4 hours.

Lighting

A historic steam locomotive, the Nickel Plate 765, Carrying 800 passengers on a sight-seeing trip from Buffalo to visit the city of Corning, NY and the Corning Museum of glass.

Equipment

Nikon d-7000 using a Nikon dx 18-105 3.5-5.6 lens. Hand held, no tripod or Flash.

Inspiration

I never miss a good photo opportunity and am an avid historical buff. This was actually a surprise to me as I was heading out just to get some shots around the city and ran into a Friend who informed me that the train would be coming into town in a couple of hours. Naturally I could not miss the opportunity for this one. SO I headed up to scout out the best place to get my shots. I got some great shots, this one being my favorite. But what a fantastic opportunity it was to see her coming into the city blowing black smoke and hearing the whistle blow. My only regret was missing an opportunity to head up and get shots of her going over the upper falls at Letchworth stat park later that day on her return trip to buffalo, NY.

Editing

Limited post processing in Light room nothing need to be removed or added to the shot, Perfect as is.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon d-7000, standard lens in my bag is the Nikon 18-105 3.5-5.6 and a Nikon 70-200 f 2.8, Neutral Density (ND) and Graduated Neutral Density (GND) filters.

Feedback

My advice is to shoot the shot you want, don't worry about what others are doing. Pay attention to the lighting and if outdoors the position of the sun and if its over cast, a few clouds or a perfectly clear day. Pay close attention to your WB, ISO and EV settings. I always shoot manual, Never let the camera choose your settings for you, If you shoot in auto mode, take the time to learn about the settings, you'd be amazed at the difference of your shots. You may have a bit of a learning curve but with the internet there are thousands of great websites to learn from.
