The only thing that could make it better is if the other boat were not there. I love the simplicity of the oar in the water. And, just enough "movement" to indicate the oar is actually being used by someone in a boat. As a matter of fact, all the other is extraneous and draws my eye away from the oar, where it wants to be. You could crop out the entire top half of the image and have a more powerful photograph!

Location
This photo was taken at Lake Louis in Banff Canada. I was riding passenger in their beautiful red canoes.Time
As a landscape photographer, we all know the best times are the hours before sunrise and sunset. Unfortunately, I did not have that luxury during this trip. So this picture is actually when the sun is right above us. Sometimes you just gotta work with what you got.Lighting
I definitely wanted the reflection in the shot. Normally, I would shoot for a longer shutter so calm down the water a little but we are on a moving boat so that wasn't an option. So to add some more interest, I asked my friend to hold the paddle steady for a few seconds and added that as an extra element to the image.Equipment
This was actually done on a entry-level dslr (Canon T4i) with the kit lens! Shows you that the equipment is just one part of the equation; and more often than not, its not the most crucial.Inspiration
Being in the middle of the amazing lake with its turquoise water and nothing but nature all around you is the best inspiration anyone can get. It is hard to capture the feeling of a location in an image. I tried my best here. I am sure I fell short.Editing
Believe it or not, I actually bracketed this scene on a moving canoe. It was not perfect. I had to manually align the images in Photoshop. But it was much needed to cover all the dynamic range of the scene. As it was an entry-level camera, that too a Canon, I knew recovery of shadows and extreme highlights wouldn't be possible without lots of noise. In my camera bag
Nowadays I shoot with Sony a7rii with a 16-35 f5 Zeiss. I wouldn't give it up for anything right now (even the new Canon 5D iv). I also have a 14mm f2.8 in my bag which is mostly used for Star photography. That is pretty much it excluding my ND-10. I try to keep my equipment minimal and light. Oh right, recently got a Phantom 3 as well. Aerial photography is a different beast to tame.Feedback
I would say think of composition as the first thing. Light is not in your favor so you have to work on other aspects. Try to add some dynamics to the shot with different layers (paddle, boat, mountains). And don't forget to put the camera down and enjoy the moment. I was guilty of this myself when I first started.
