Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Mattawa Adventure Camp, in Mattawa Ontario, on the Mattawa River. I am an amateur when it comes to photography, I have been told I have an eye, but some days I think its all luck.

Time

It was the morning of my cousin's wedding and it was Thanksgiving weekend, October 10,2015. It was around 8-9 a.m., and the morning was cool. There was frost on the dock and surrounding rocks, I remember thinking about how slippery it would be and to be careful as I didn't want to slip right into the river. The sun was coming over the trees in the east and starting shine down the river to the west.

Lighting

Nope, but if anyone has any advice on this I am all ears, as lighting/speed/aperture are not my strong points.

Equipment

Nikon D40, free standing.

Inspiration

I woke that morning and couldn't believe how gorgeous it was the mist was sitting on the river, and all I could think was how gorgeous it would be with the mist and the fall colours. I grabbed my camera and walked to the dock. I was in awe of the my surroundings that morning, I had never seen anything like it before.

Editing

I had some dust/dirt spots on it, so I used Windows editing software and got rid of those, but that was all I did.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon in a backpack style bag, it has the D40 with a 18-55mm lens on it and then my 55-200mm lens just in case. I have multiple SD cards 2-4gb on hand cause you never know how many pictures you will take at any given event. I have been known to take as few as 50 or so photos if I get busy on a weekend but up to over 1000 on a trip depending on what and where I am. I always have my extra batteries and charger just in case.

Feedback

Like I said, I am an amateur when it comes to photography. I find that I like a brighter day, and that the "golden hours" take gorgeous photos (dawn/dusk). I frequently find myself frustrated as I don't know enough about my speed, aperture, or lighting to get the look I want. I tend to take multiple photos of a scene as I am sure that at least one of those pictures will turn out. lol. My uncle jokes that if you go through my photos it's like a video. And with the wonders of the digital age you can delete anything that didn't turn out.
