Toft point is always a favorite of mine so I picked this spot for my first attempt at capturing the Milky Way arc in a panorama format.
This image was awarded the Peoples Choice Award for the 54th Jurried Exhibit at the Francis Hardy Gallery in Ephraim, WI.
Everything lined up and the sky was clear.
The Northern Lights were active very far to the North. The white light on the Horizon above the tree line is Cana Ialsnd Lighthouse and you can see light polution from across Lake Michigan.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Door County, WI. Otherwise known as the "Thumb" of Wisconsin. Door County is a peninsula surrounded by Lake Michigan and the waters of Green Bay. This photo was taken at Toft Point overlooking Moonlight Bay. The yellow glow to the left is the Northern Lights happening way up north. The white light almost in the the middle and just above the tree line is Cana Island Lighthouse on North Bay. To the right, you can see city lights across Lake Michigan roughly 70+ miles away. This place has a lot of history and is one of my favorite locals to photograph.

Time

Living in Door County is a dream for night photos. We are surrounded by Lake Michigan and there we have small villages that run up the peninsual so light polution is minimal. The day of this photo, I was out hiking at Toft Point and was playing around with Photopills on my phone. Everything lined up perfect for this shot and according to the app, I had to be here at 12:45a.m. to capture this. The skies stayed clear and everything came together.

Lighting

Door County has minimal light polution and is a great place for viewing and capturing the night sky. The moon had set earlier in the evening and the sky stayed clear for this shot.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Nikon D700 with an 18mm lens. Tripod. 16 images at f3.5, 25sec, iso 4000. Edited in lightroom and stitched together in Photoshop.

Inspiration

When I was young, I spent almost every weekend camping or at a lake cabin up north in WI. The skies were dark and I would get lost in the stars every night. Today, I live in Door County, WI where the night skies are dark and we are far enough north that we see the Northern Lights on a regular basis. This spring, the skies stayed clear on the moonless nights. I had to get out and try to capture the Milky Way in all its glory.

Editing

I brightened the highlights and teh whites. Pulled some of the noise out of it with Lightroom and stitched all the photos together using photoshop.

In my camera bag

Nikon D700 with an array of Nikkor lenses.

Feedback

If you are interested in the Milky Way, get yourself Photopills. You can find out where and when the Milky Way will be where you want it to be. It takes the guess work out of what time will be the right time.
