Location
The photo was taken in the centre of my birth-town, Bristol (UK), as part of the "24 Hours In Bristol" photo competition. Over the course of 24 hours (midday to midday), entrants were allocated a specific hour to grab the best picture they could - the best of these were then selected and exhibited, with one winner and two runners-up per hour - http://www.24hoursinbristol.co.uk/ explains it far better than I!Time
That was the irony - as part of the competition I had been allocated the 4pm to 5pm slot. I took this a 5:02pm, and as such just missed out on being able to enter it.Lighting
The lighting was "moody" to say the least - it had just been drizzling, and I was lucky that a bit of light just started to break through the clouds.Equipment
No lens/tripod/flash or even camera - a mobile phone, the Microsoft Lumia 950XL.Inspiration
I love taking "gritty" street photos, and was inspired by the juxtaposition of the fairly urban scene contrasted with the flowers; I also wondered "What's his story?" - was he on a first date? Who were the flowers for? How did they meet? Was it Tinder? Is he on Tinder *now*? (What a dog). I also had an idea of how I was going to post-process the shot before I took it, which is a rare occurrence.Editing
Indeed I did; I attempted to make a homage to my fellow Bristolian Banksy, who is of course famous for monochrome pieces with red roses; this was easily achieved with a quick run through Photoshop Express on the phone, with a couple of tweaks to contrast. In my camera bag
I've always had a real soft spot for Pentax gear, and for me the Pentax K-S2 is a really well-balanced, excellent value solution for most shooting scenarios; given that shots usually present themselves in the split-second (changing lenses has lost me 100's of photos!), I couple this with a Tamron 18-200mm superzoom lens which offers a great range and feels solid when coupled with the KS-2 body. I'm also becoming more and more interested in "phonetography", and change my handset as often as my socks - as such I always slip an external mobile charger/battery in my bag.Feedback
Be lucky! Most street photography is about being in the right place at the right time, and traditional beauty tends to get turned on it's head - "gritty, grimy and ugly" can become "interesting and aesthetically pleasing" by walking around a corner or crossing a street. Also come to Bristol, it's an awesome place.
