Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Harare, Zimbabwe. It was a children's concert under the stars and a performance of the The Lion King.

Time

It was a night time concert

Lighting

A do a lot of event photography and the light is something you have very little control over. Just make the best of whatever situation you are given. I shot a lot for free for 2 - 3 years until I had better mastered the use of ambient light only where possible

Equipment

Nikon D610 camera, Tamron 70 -300 mm, no flash ambient lighting only and hand held

Inspiration

Needed as many pictures as possible for the client of the performers, and saw this beam of white light that was helping this little boy stand out nicely

Editing

Very little post production needed with this pic, a bit of sharpening and small amount of vibrancy added

In my camera bag

Nikon D850 , Nikon 70 - 200 f/2.8, Nikon 24 - 70 mm f/2.8, Nikon 50 mm f/1.8, Nikon SB 700 flash and 2nd camera Nikon D610. Lots of spare batteries!

Feedback

I would normally shoot this type night event with my f/2.8 70 - 200 mm or my F/2.8 24-70 mm. I always try to avoid using flash where possible and use what ambient light is available for best results. Often there is a lot more ambient light available than it might appear at first, so only use flash when absolutely necessary. All my music concert photography I use ambient light only as it would not make sense using flash from the stage pit sometimes as you are too far back anyway
