Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo on a beach just north of the town Ardrossan in Scotland. The photo is of the Isle of Arran off the west coast of Scotland.Time
This photo was taken at sunset, this was the earliest I could get to the beach with my camera.Lighting
I loved the soft lighting of the sunset to the left of the shot, but it wasn't bright enough, so I did some long exposures and got some silky smooth water into the bargain.Equipment
I used a Canon 700D with an EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens, and I used the Gorillapod as a small tripod to get close to the ground.Inspiration
When heading home from work in Irvine, on the train home I noticed the snowy peaks of Arran in the distance, and I knew I had to get a photo. Later that night I travelled to Ardrossan and set up my camera and tripod just as the sun was setting.Editing
As I look back at the original RAW image, I can say I did a massive amount of post-processing on this image. I made the slight colours a lot more vibrant, brought out the peaks in the distance, and brightened the beach section in the foregroundIn my camera bag
I normally have just my camera and kit lens, sometimes with filters and a small tripod.Feedback
To get a shot like this, visit a nice beach just before the golden hour and get snapping. I used a long exposure to make the water silky, and to allow the camera to gather more light. A foreground element is crucial in landscape shots, and don't underestimate the power of post-processing, as long as you have a good eye and don't overdo the effects, you can turn a flat boring shot into a vibrant shot like mine. Another thing, post-processing cannot make a bad shot better, only edit the best photos to make them even better.
