Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in front of my house out in the country. This is my niece, and being that she is the only person in our family to have green eyes and red hair, I take her photo as often as I can.

Time

This was taken in the afternoon after she got off of school. She was tired, and her hair was windblown and I remember she was slightly irritated that I waylaid her on her quest for a snack. I kept trying to get her to relax her face and give me a smile, but in the end, am incredibly happy that she didn't, as this turned out to be one of my favorite photos due to her serious and thoughtful expression.

Lighting

This was late afternoon at exactly that time of day when everything is lit up in a golden haze. The way the light brought out the green in her eyes and the red in her hair was amazing.

Equipment

The only equipment I used was my Canon EOS Rebel T6s and a 18-135mm lens.

Inspiration

My niece is an inspiration all on her own.

Editing

Besides a few editing tweaks, I had to do very little in terms of post-processing. With her hair, eyes, and skin coloring, she's the perfect photographers model.

In my camera bag

I actually never take my bag anywhere! I start off the day with my Canon EOS Rebel T6s strapped around my neck and continue on my day waiting for the perfect shot. Capturing the moment is what is most important for me. I like things to be as simple as possible and choose to shoot vicariously throughout the day. I think it's sometimes intimidating for a new photographer who thinks he/she has to have a lot of fancy equipment and a head full of know how to be able to take the perfect shot. Sometimes it's just intuitive.

Feedback

As a self taught photographer just trying to learn as much as I can, my best advice for trying to capture an image like this is just to keep your camera with you at all times. Don't plan a perfect moment, you never know when inspiration might hit!
