Behind The Lens

Location

I left my home in rural central Maine and only had to walk a few hundred feet before I found this snake on the side of the road. I rushed back home to grab my camera and fortunately it was still there when I returned, staying still as if it was posing for my camera.

Time

I must have left my house early in the afternoon. These type of snakes are common in Maine but this was my first time capturing one.

Lighting

99% of my photos and videos are shot with all natural lighting, and this one was no exception. During the summer I have to make the most out of every day because when winter comes around my photography becomes stilted. It's just too cold and too dark and too cloudy.

Equipment

I shot this on my Canon 7D with my Sigma 30mm 1.4.

Inspiration

Living in such a rural area, it doesn't take long before you feel like you've seen it all and captured it all. It's not a bad thing for a photographer, at least not for awhile. It forces you to be more creative and to leave no stone unturned to find n interesting subject.

Editing

No post-processing whatsoever.

In my camera bag

Being on a (very, very tight) budget might not necessarily be the worst thing. I have a Canon 7D body, a 30mm Sigma lens and a Canon 100mm macro. I wouldn't mind adding a zoom lens to that but for now I think I can make due with what I've got.

Feedback

This might be a cardinal sin in the world of photography - but what works works and that's the end of it. No matter how fast my shutter speed was, there was no way that I could snap a picture at the exact moment the snake flicked his tongue at me. So I switched my Canon 7D to movie mode, shot a video and grabbed the screencap later. I feel no remorse.
