The Federal government has recently made plans to start practicing birth control on our nations wild horses instead of using the birth control method known as PZP. These horses will be effected. It's hard to explain what it's like out on the range photographing wild horses, but it is special. Those horses make their own families, and they take care of each other. The horses in this photos are a bachelor band, and in this photo they are grieving over the loss of one of their own.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Pine Nut Mountains in western Nevada east of Gardnerville. I travel to this area set up camp on the public lands and embed myself in wild horse country.

Time

This photo was taken sometime early in the morning. I walked from my camp looking for the horses. In this photo the band known as the bachelors was grieving over the loss of one of their own.

Lighting

I used natural lighting.

Equipment

The camera I used was a Canon T3i. No tripod or flash was used.

Inspiration

An event was taking place at this scene. The band known as the Bachelors were grieving over the loss of one of their own. It could have been a new stallion on that range that kicked another stallion thus causing a fatal inury. The bachelors are standing over the deceased horse.

Editing

No post processing. This photo was straight out of the can so-to-speak.

In my camera bag

I always have extra batteries and memory cards in my bag.

Feedback

If you want great photos of wildlife it is best to try and make yourself invisible. Embedding oneself in their territory is both thrilling and dangerous. You should always be observant and be aware of how wild horses act so you don't get inured or get physically effected by their activities.
