Behind The Lens
Location
It had been a long hot day with a lot of driving and animal sighting. This was at Kruger National Park in South Africa which is has the largest concentration of wild animals in Southern Africa. We were heading back to our camp in the reserve before the gates closed for the night.Time
At dusk just as the sun was going down, casting a magical golden glow in the sky. This is the time that all the animals move to their night sleeping quarters as when it is dark, the predators like the Lions and Leopards come out to hunt. It the time best spent sipping some wine, feet up and just looking out over the veld.Lighting
It was that magical time when the sun casts a mix of rust and golden glow. When I saw the silhouette that the tree was casting, I knew that I had to take a pic.Equipment
I used my Nikon camera that rested on a bean bag on my window frame as one is not allowed out the car due to the dangerous animals.Inspiration
I am big on composition and character in a photo so the combination of the tree and the sun just spoke to me. I maneuvered the car a couple of times until I just had it right and then snapped the pic.Editing
I changed the sky a bit more to pronounce the rust color even more against the darkness of the tree.In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D3200 with both a standard lens as well as a long lens as that is a must for animal viewing as sometimes the animals are far away. I also carry an iPad and a nifty dongle to connect the camera memory stick to the iPad to download the pics. Once I have them on the iPad, I decide which are worthy to remain versus deleting.Feedback
To me, light can be juggled around so king to me is composition and character as if you get that wrong then the most wonderful lighting will not help. So, I pass up on many shooting opportunities to go for fewer and more quality shots than quantity. The ultimate sophistication is simplicity so keep the photos as clean as possible as too many object just create noise. The ideal photo must be able to tell a story and take the viewer into the photo.
