Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Hunnington Gardens in Alhambra, California.

Time

I always like to shoot early in the morning with warm sunlight. I don't think Hunnington opens up till 11:00 Am though.

Lighting

I think you get the best light early in the morning when the sun is coming up and late afternoon when the sun is going down. I believe that for certain photography, like my nature photography noon is a bad time, because I believe that shadows enhance my photography., At noon, you have no shadows when the sun is straight up.

Equipment

I believe on that day I was using my Nikon D300 with an 18-300 zoom lens. Hand held not tripod.

Inspiration

Seems that when I started taking my nature photography seriously, that flowers were a good subject. Then I graduated to seascapes, landscapes and animals. I started with flowers because I think flowers illustrate the colors and textures of nature.

Editing

I have been using photoshop and lightroom for more than 20 years.

In my camera bag

I usually use my Nikon D300 or my 600. I use an ultra-wide-angle lens, Sigma 12-24. I use 18-400 zoom and 1300 zoom lenses.

Feedback

Have the right lens for the job. Out of the box lenses that come with camera bundles are usually not the best. You will have to invest and spend some money. It is a very rewarding hobby or career and you will fall in love and get hooked with the right equipment!!!
