Location
This photo is taken at Shannon Falls, located in Shannon Falls Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada. It is composed of a series of cliffs, rising 335 metres, making it the third highest falls in the province. The park holds significant spiritual value to the Squamish First Nation, the first people to live in this area. They told of a two headed sea serpent, Say-noth-ka who lived in and around Howe Sound. According to legend this beast traveled both on land and in water. Some versions say it was Say-noth-ka who formed Shannon Falls by slithering and twisting his powerful body up the mountainside on repeated expeditions. Say-noth-ka gradually wore down a spillway for these cascading waters.Time
In these mountains, I find early to mid-morning gives the best opportunity for a great capture.Lighting
Along with the time of day, the tree-filtered light provides an ambiance that I don't think I'd be able to recreate with post-processing.Equipment
I used a simple point-and-shoot SONY cyber-shot DSC-W530.Inspiration
I love this area - the mountains and the water are all around you and everything feels fresh and clean. My daughter's name is Shannon so I have a special affinity for these falls.Editing
All I did for this particular image was sharpen it a bit to highlight the trees and the falls. In my camera bag
I carry either my Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS45 or my SONY cyber-shot DSC-W530 with me at all times. On a photo-trek, I'll add my FinePix S4300, LOTS of batteries, plenty of SD cards, and a monopod.Feedback
Take your time - wait for that moment, the moment when you are looking through the view finder and everything feels right. Move over a foot if you need, change your position for a different perspective, rub your tummy and pat your head - - whatever it takes for you to know that this is "the" shot.
