Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the beautiful fall garden in Vero Beach Florida called McKee Botanical Garden. They have a yearly water lily festival and this was around that timeframe. This was early June of this year.

Time

I never get out early enough so I'm sure it was later morning. I almost always have to work with difficult lighting. Lighting is one of my weaknesses.

Lighting

If the sun is strong enough to make a reflection, you have to be careful not to blow out highlights. In florida we have a lot of strong sun but also patchy clouds so wait a few minutes for the lighting you want.

Equipment

This day I was trying my new 300mm nikon pf F4 lens. This was coupled with a nikon 2x converter. The focus is pretty slow with this converter but the flower wasn't going anywhere.

Inspiration

I am drawn to reflections. Water lilys and reflections go hand in hand.

Editing

Oh yes, I use lightroom to maximize the color, darken the water, bring the highlights under control then bring it into photoshop and added the wave. I have many lily with reflections I decided to give this one some movement.

In my camera bag

I don't have many lens, just a few nice ones. I always have a polarizing filter, monopod, bug spray, sun hat, now a nikon D750. I don't usually bring everything, I like to take out one lens and learn to love that one for the day.

Feedback

I have lived in some very beautiful places before I took up photography with passion. My eyes have been opened since I now look at everything as a photograph. I wish with all my heart I had started studying photography years ago. Sometimes the image grows in photoshop. You never know what you can create when your imagination kicks in. Study and practice, repeat.
