Alongside the many marshes In Low Country, trees are uprooted, making for interesting compositions and wonderful textures. These particular roots were found at Skidaway State Park along the Georgia Coast. To me, the tree roots are almost like the bones of the forest, staying hidden from view for the majority of life.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was shot at a state Park near Savannah, Georgia called Skidaway. I was a student at the local art school majoring in video game design, but I loved to spend my free time exploring and taking photographs.

Time

It was taken at around 5 pm on a lovely day in February. I waded through mud and ruined my shoes to get up close to the driftwood along the edge of the marshes.

Lighting

I love natural light, as many photographers do. It was a bit overcast, leading to some wonderfully muted tones, but overall brings the image together with lots of darker colors contrasted with the light grey sky.

Equipment

I shot this on a Canon Rebel T5 with a sigma 17-70 mm lens. No other equipment was needed.

Inspiration

The wood itself was beautiful and had amazing texture to it, and a normal shot of the driftwood was amazing, but I though adding and interesting angle and allowing the viewer to be up close with the art created by nature would allow for a greater appreciation of it as a whole.

Editing

I adjusted some contrast in this photo and brought down the saturation on my raw image to give a darker mood to the piece.

In my camera bag

I always bring my Canon Rebel T5 with me. It's such an easy body to learn. I'm also very attached to my Sigma 17-70 mm lens, but I'll also pack my Canon 50-300 mm lens just in case I need that zoom. Any time I plan on going out in any loway light situatios, I always make sure to have my tripod and remote shutter control.

Feedback

Explore! Go off the beaten path. Take photos of common things from interesting angles. It shines new light on old subjects and can give a completely different interpretation of objects.
