Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at home, this is because I knew that it would be difficult to take her into the studio as she wouldn't keep still.

Time

This was taken during the afternoon, the sunlight was shining through the balcony door and she had been sleeping in one place most of the morning. I was brave and woke her up, I was lucky that she was in a good mood and put up with me shoving a camera in her face.

Lighting

I didn't use any studio lighting for this just natural lighting.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D3200 and a Macro lens, I shot it free hand because she was very low to the floor and I knew I would be able to stabilise the camera myself.

Inspiration

I took this for a college project where I decided to focus the project on my journey through depression. For this, I focused on the positive parts and the people that helped me through it as well. With Mog it may sound naff to some people but she helped me a lot because I found it difficult to voice my thoughts to people, so I would tell her everything which meant that it was out of my head and I wouldn't get a reply which sometimes was what I wanted.

Editing

In post processing, I made the image black and white and I also up the clarity of the image to try and bring out more detail in her fur.

In my camera bag

At the moment I don't have a lot of stuff in my bag (I have a very small bag), I just have the Nikon D3200 and the standard kit lens along with a tripod. Sometime soon I am planning on upgrading my camera bag and get a couple of other things as well. I find being a student photographer you are expected to have a lot of equipment already but if you have a good university they should have a good store to borrow that equipment from, this means that you can try different things out and find out what you want and what you don't. It also means that during the course you can slowly build up for camera equipment ready for you to go into the photographic industry.

Feedback

Take your time, with animals, you have to wait until they are ready or staying still. I also found that she was more willing to let me photograph her when I was on her level or below her level so doesn't shoot above. If the animal is being uncooperative on the day that you were planning to do the shoot, leave them alone for a little while or try and do it on a different day, it depends on if the animal is yours or a clients pet.
