I took this photo of my niece, in Burnaby Lake Park in British Columbia, Canada. My husband, my niece and I love photography: the three of us have formed a little photo club and we often are out taking lots of photos with our cameras. We live in the beautiful west coast and there are photos to be taken everywhere.Time
This shot was taken in early fall on a chilly overcast day around mid-afternoon.Lighting
This shot was in natural overcast light. No flash. No reflector. My niece was actually posing for my husband and looking towards him. I angled myself in a position to get the best side-lighting I could. I used a high ISO 400. Then I took the shot.Equipment
This shot was with my Nikon D5100, and my Nikkor 55-300mm lens at 200mm at f/5, ISO 400. No other equipment. I like to shoot portraits with my zoom lens as I love the blurred backgrounds. I am an amateur photographer and I am constantly learning and evolving with my photography.Inspiration
We were on one of our 'family photo-club' outings taking shots and I told my niece to pose for us. I find that overcast days make for great portraits. I like the mood and feel of overcast days. I think it makes portraits more interesting. My niece was posing for my husband and I took this shot of her. I liked the angle and the resulting photo of her not looking at me. I find it more intriguing.Editing
I do all my post-processing on my iPad. I did adjustments with the exposure, the contrast and vibrancy and cropped the original photo. I may have added a subtle filter as well.In my camera bag
My Nikon D5100 with Nikkor 18-55mm lens and my Nikkor 55-300mm lens. I have a UV filter on both my lenses. My gorilla tripod and rain-sleeve for my camera and lenses. And of course, an extra battery and memory card. As I am constantly evolving and learning, I hope to add more equipment to my bag.Feedback
Since I live in British Columbia on the West Coast, which is considered the largest remaining intact temperate rainforest in the world, one must learn to shoot on overcast days as we get a lot of those. To achieve this type of portrait, you would need an overcast day and a higher ISO. I used 400. The overcast day would give you this type of light and mood in your portrait. Also, a zoom lens to create the blurred background and bring your subject more in the foreground. ~
