This little blighter was getting a blood meal from my hand. I got off lucky here as they can give a nasty bite and cause wounds that take months to heal. This lady had the decency to bite me gently and not cause any infection, other people aren't so fortunate though. Only females bite as they need the blood to produce eggs, males just feed on nectar so are harmless. You can tell a female from a male by her eyes being totally separated (bit difficult to tell in this photo), whereas the males are joined. Taken at Woodwalton Fen National Nature Reserve, Ramsey, England
