Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Naples FL.

Time

This photo was taken at a little after 9 AM. The sun was up and bright allowing me to use a good fast shutter speed. I shot this at 1/2000th of a second at f/7.1 and ISO 400. For the most part when I photograph birds I either take the photo in full sunlight or I use a Better Beamer.

Lighting

This shot was all natural lighting.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D MK II and a Canon 100-400 f/4.5 - 5.6 lens. This was at 370mm so a little less than the maximum magnification.

Inspiration

I was at my in-laws and I wanted to get away from them so I grabbed my camera and went for a walk. I noticed an Osprey's nest on the golf course so I went to take a look and I found two of them and a baby.

Editing

Nothing special on the processing, I just brought out the shadows a little, I sharpened and then cropped.

In my camera bag

For what it is worth I don't usually use a camera bag. I have numerous ones and I have tried all kinds of styles from companies like Domke, Pelican Tamrac, LowePro etc. What I have ended up with is I store everything in an individual case. I have no particular favorite brand. I have lens cases from LowePro, Thinktank, and some Chinese ones as well. I put a tag on the lens case so I will know what is in it as they are all black. I then put what I want to take in a Stanley Fatmax box. The Faxmax boxes are tool boxes with a weather proof seal. They are similar to a Pelican case only much lighter and 10 percent of the cost. They are not the quality of a Pelican case but I don't need a pressure relief valve etc. Once I get where I want I pull out of the box the individual items I want to take. For what it is worth I attended a workshop in Maine a couple of years ago and was laughed at as I was using my daughters old purple, white and black Jansport backpack from middle school. No one would steal a bag like this and everything inside was very well protected as each item had it's own case. Second I only carried what I needed to make the shot, an extra wide angle lens, filters etc. not items that would be useless to me on that shoot. Others had numerous lenses in very well padded massive backpacks and they never used any of it yet they were lugging it down to the site. So, my attitude is just take what you need.

Feedback

Wow advice on bird photos - I can give a little but not much. Naturally it depends upon what you are going after, but keep the following in mind regardless. You need a fast shutter speed with the longer lens, so shoot wide open or close to it. To get a faster shutter speed shoot at the highest ISO that works well with your model of camera. This really requires you to test your own stuff to see what you can get out of it. Shoot in the daylight or use a Better Beamer. If you don't know what a Better Beamer is, it is just a flash attachment that focuses the light so it is thrown a little further. What makes it nice is you end up with a catch light in the bird's eye. If you really want to get good at taking photos of birds there was and still may be a website called "Secrets to Digital Bird Photography", I don't know the URL to it but it is 900 pages of information on photographing birds.
