Always try to get out early in the morning, or late afternoon. First hour of sunrise, last hour of sunset. You can't just stand up and take a picture always. Sometimes you have to work for it. Kneel down, lay down, take risks, whatever you have to do to get that perfect shot. Don't just go to the tourist areas to take your shots. The hidden gems are always on a trail. At least that's how it works for me.
