Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while out on Fistral beach in Newquay in England. The waves had been really ferocious that day, and so I could see quite a few tired surfers, knowing eventually they'd come back to shore looking like they'd ran a marathon. This particular guy is a mate of mine, and I managed to capture the reflection in the sand, by waiting until the tide was at its furthest distance out, so the water was smooth.

Time

Was about 4pm, but was really overcast so was struggling to get sufficient lighting, so ended up having to drop shutter speed while trying to take shots of the surfers. Needless to say, this shot didn't need a particular high shutter speed.

Lighting

I really enjoyed the reflections off the water/sand, I think it makes the shot look even more tired and moody. The overcast day also makes you completely focused on the surfer.

Equipment

Took my very basic kit out to the beach, as I'm about to upgrade. Canon 450d with a 75-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM. No tripod

Inspiration

The water was proving such an incredible reflection, I waited until something genuinely interesting/eye-catching came into frame.

Editing

I extended the image to exaggerate the rule of thirds, and to make it seem like everything is so far away, hopefully reinforcing the surfers tiredness.

In my camera bag

50mm f/1.8 and 75-300mm f/4-5.6 + 450d (soon to be 7d mark 2!)
