images of past industrial transport of Pontypool The main line, which opened in February 1796, was 12.5 miles (20.1 km) long, and ran from Newport to Pontnewynydd, via Pontymoile, For almost 100 years from the mid 19th century to the early 1960s, Pontypool Road was an important station and key railway junction connecting to the main line from Newport to the Midlands and north of England. The building of canals involved the severance of land, as well as of existing roads and footpaths, so new bridges were required to solve the problem.
