Behind The Lens

Location

This shoot took place on a farmstead in rural South Central Nebraska; the perfect place to take advantage of the prairie grass and country look.

Time

This was towards evening hours, around 5pm during a mostly overcast day.

Lighting

I honestly was really lucky with my lighting as I used only natural light. It was mostly overcast so the sun was soft on their faces but bright enough to create some beautiful natural shadows on them as well.

Equipment

I used a Canon 6d with a 50mm lens. I love taking advantage of the natural resources and using minimal equipment.

Inspiration

I really loved the connection between these three girls. I have known them for a little over two years and they've always been happy, resilient, and close to each other. I wanted to capture that purity and joy between them before they all grew up (which is sadly happening too fast). They are all so naturally beautiful I just couldn't not take photos of them.

Editing

For post processing, I added some golden color to give it that sun soaked look, and used a partial sky overlay to enhance the clouds. I brought out the tones of their skin and evened out the shadows on their faces.

In my camera bag

Just my 6D and a 50mm 1.8! As much as I love all of the equipment and technology, I just feel so secure with taking advantage of ethereal moments any way I can. I feel it really helps my skills evolve as opposed to using everything as a crutch.

Feedback

Never go out looking for the perfect day or the perfect shot! You'll be let down before you even start. You need to be flexible with your environment, not vice versa. And always let kids be kids. For every serious capture I had, I took about 10 silly ones. If you take time with them and make them comfortable the shots you get are amazing and more perfect than you could imagine.
