Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my studio, I am self taught, with help from peers. I had a room in my flat as a studio, when I gave the flat up I realised I didn't want to give up photography as it massively helped my mental health. I bit the bullet and found premises to rent. That was nearly 3 years ago now and I love it. The sstudio has also been used by other local and not so local photographers.

Time

This shoot had been in the planning for weeks, so imagine the excitement when the day finally arrived. We all got to the studio about 11am and we were there til 8pm. A very long day, but well worth it as we started of with Alice and ended up with Madhatter. All with the same model.

Lighting

Lighting was standard studio set up

Equipment

Shot with Nikon D7100, 35mm lens F5.6. 2 Studio lights at 45 degree of model. Fab bargain backdrop from Ebay.

Inspiration

I love anything a bit whacky, and who is more eccentric than The Madhatter? The model Jackie is also the makeup artist and loves getting creative with colour. I make costumes for my shoots quite often so this was so much fun to get stuck into. I made the hat from wire and string which was inspired from an image I came across on google. The jacket had been in my wardre for about 8 years and never work so I set to work to add some bits to it. Lesley the hairstylist amazingly got Jackies hair piled up into the hat. I am a lover of animal print so had to put a wee signature touch into the costume with a little bit of Zebra print fabric and boots. The shoot was planned to go from Alice, to Madhatter to Queen of Hearts, but the Queen is being done at another time. I am over the moon at how this shoot turned out :-)

Editing

I used PS Elements to soften the skin slightly and blur the background a bit more than it was.

In my camera bag

I have very limited equipment. I have my Nikon D7100 and my wee back up (first DSLR) D3200. I have a 35mm prime lens and an 18-200 lens. I also have a Nikon speedlight which is rarelyI used. Despite loving photography, I am not a gadget person and although I would love to be able to afford another couple of faster/sharper lenses, I get by with what I have and wouldn't want tons of stuff to try and choose from or figure out :-)

Feedback

My advice is, get your creative head on and work with it. Go with the flow, let your mind run wild and just try. If it doesn't work, keep trying :-) Or if you are really stuck, employ me to help you with the creativity hehe ;-)
